Jeff Meddock was a teacher, coach, friend, and most importantly, a role model to almost every child and adult he encountered in his short time on Earth. He was much more mature than the birth date on his driver's license stated. As a 20 year old man, he took on the task of coaching 6th graders in a traveling basketball league, yet the kids never really thought he was only a few years older than them. He taught these kids teamwork and friendship, and showed them that with hard work, you can accomplish your goals whether large or small.
This park is being dedicated to Jeff's memory because he did so much for this community, much of it unnoticed, even by those who participated and continue to participate in what he helped start. Jeff Meddock was a man without children who did more for the kids of Economy than most parents do. He was an unselfish mentor who felt the need to give life lessons to those he coached, and instill respect for others as well as themselves. He started the annual summer basketball camps 20 years ago, making it one of the best and most affordable camps of its kind in the area. He would get some of the better local coaches and High School/College athletes to spend their time with a group of kids every summer not so much for a paycheck, but out of respect for a man they saw was doing something great for the children of Economy Borough and it's surrounding areas.
Jeff also was a proponent of getting the sand volleyball courts installed as well as the outdoor basketball courts. After he left the Recreation Board, the work started by Jeff continued through people like myself, whom he recommended join the board. I could talk all day about Jeffrey Meddock's accomplishments, but I don't think he would have been comfortable with all of that praise. He liked to go about his business unnoticed, with maybe a thanks here or there. Since we are no longer able to give him thanks directly, I'd like to give thanks to his parents, Dale and Wilma, who raised a great man, and although he is no longer with us, we, the Economy Recreation Board, hope this small gesture will help his memory, life lessons, and hard work mentality live on. With that, I would like to unveil the Jeffrey Meddock Memorial Park.
Thanks, Jeff.
